William J. Quinones-Baldrich MD
SCVS President, 2016-2017

It is an honor and a privilege to serve as the 45th president of the Society for Clinical Vascular Surgery. I congratulate and thank Dr. Tom Bower for his time and commitment to our Society. The 44th annual symposium was a resounding success with record number of abstract submissions and outstanding presentations. Will Jordan is to be commended for his efforts as program Chairman. We welcomed 484 attendees which, included members, fellows, residents, students, and guests. This provided a unique opportunity for presentation of original work, updates on ongoing projects and national clinical trials through both podium and poster presentations. I thank all who contributed and participated.

Tom Bower's presidential address was inspirational emphasizing dedication, hard work, and persistence. He urged all of us to set high goals and standards as individuals. Our distinguish visiting professor, Dr. James Stanley, shared his personal experiences and how recent challenges have opened his eyes on what it means to be the patient. He urged us to reject mediocrity, be patient, tolerant, and creative. He reminded us to recognize limitations and know what we know. These messages serve as a compass to guide practicing surgeons, fellows, resident, and students. Another highlight of the meeting was the international panel where colleagues from outside of the United States shared their experience and opinions on important aspects of our specialty.

Our Society originated in 1969 and has grown to have 549 active members, 463 candidate members and 275 senior members. Our mission and purpose is "to advance the art and science of vascular surgery; to provide a forum for vascular surgeons, and to improve the delivery of healthcare in vascular disease." As active participants in

the Society we can be proud to honor this mission and make a significant contribution to our specialty through research and education fostering programs appropriate for the practicing vascular surgeon. The annual meeting is a forum in which surgeons can review their outcomes and present what they have learned as vascular surgery continues to evolve. Senior surgeons have the opportunity to interact with junior faculty and serve as mentors. Residents and fellows can better understand the importance of commitment to learning and self-assessment, which results in improvement of patient care. Medical students receive inspiration to pursue a career in our exciting specialty.

Plans are well underway for the 45th Annual Symposium to be held at Disneys Yacht and Beach Club in Florida, March 18-22, 2017. I encourage all to submit your original work and actively participate in the program. The Yacht and Beach Club is part of the Disney complex offering outstanding activities for the whole family. I hope you can join us.

Please share any thoughts on how we can improve any aspect of the SCVS. I will make every effort to keep our Society vibrant and meaningful to our members and their patients.
